A quick overview of the history of insurance in London

Online event
Wednesday, 19 June 2024
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)
    • Howard Benge, Director, Insurance Museum
  • London Market

In this IIL London Market webinar, Howard Benge looks at the history of insurance in London and why we need an insurance museum today, what stories it is going to tell, and who it will engage with.

Although its history stretches back to the early medieval period, Howard begins in the Roman era by looking at the areas of marine and fire insurance, as well as life assurance, bringing the story up to the 20th century.

Howard previews the stories the Museum will tell, what objects it will feature and who it will engage with, including young people deciding on their careers. The aim is to inspire them to become part of the future of insurance.

Learning objectives:

  • To deliver a summary of insurance history
  • To highlight the social relevance of insurance
  • To understand how an insurance museum will engage the public, especially young people

This session will not be recorded, so a playback/slides will not be available for members who do not attend the live event.
