Visit to Warsash Maritime Academy
On this IIL all day educational visit, attendees learned about and saw how Warsash Maritime Academy provide teaching and training of ship handling and bridge skills to the international shipping industry. The Academy is part of Southampton Solent University's Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering and is a world premier maritime education and training provider.
This visit conducted by Warsash lecturers and instructors included presentations and actual demonstrations using the Academy's own facilities (weather permitting), including bridge and engine simulators. This visit was for a maximum of twenty members, but to maximise the learning opportunity attendees were divided into two groups on arrival. By alternating the groups at lunchtime, it allowed each group to visit both Timsbury Lake (ship handling centre) and Warsash (bridge and engine simulation facilities).
All presentations included a Q&A session. Lunch and refreshments were provided.
During the visit members gained an insight into:
- The role of Warsash Maritime Academy
- An understanding of the behaviour and handling of ships by using scaled models at Timsbury Lake Campus
- An understanding of bridge and engine operations using simulators
Attendees will be required to make their own travel arrangements to/from Southampton Parkway Railway Station. Transport will be provided to/from the two venues (and return to Southampton Parkway Railway Station).
Attendees are asked to wear casual clothing and appropriate footwear suitable for outdoors at the end of November. Waterproofs/life jackets will be provided.
This visit will involve climbing flights of stairs and may be unsuitable for those with mobility issues.
