Making runways a safer place

  • Aviation & Space

THIS EVENT HAS NOW BEEN POSTPONED

In this IIL aviation lecture Arnaud Thurat will talk about the history and track records in terms of commercial aviation accidents at landing and explain how recent work from aircraft manufacturers introducing new technologies is contributing to reduce this risk.

For decades, Runway Excursions (RE) remains the number one category of accidents (more than 38% of accidents as per latest IATA figures). Although most frequently not fatal, these accidents represent a huge economic burden to the industry (airlines, airports, insurers)

Despite all the work performed by the aviation industry involving training and procedures updates, the trend of RE continues to increase consistently with global fleet growth, suggesting conventional risk mitigations are showing their limits and highlighting for several years now the need for technological breakthrough similar to the ones which occurred for other prevalent accidents risk (like TCAS introduction for mid-air collisions).

In reaction to this context, aircraft manufacturers have progressively introduced new technologies to prevent efficiently this type of accidents.

During this lecture, a specific focus will be given on specific such existing or under design technologies that aim at making runway a safer place.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • The general situation in commercial aviation regarding aircraft accidents at landing
  • The main contributing factors to these events
  • The available and emerging technologies to prevent these accidents

Chair:
Simon Abbott, Underwriting Executive, Global Aerospace.
