The shipping industry in 2050

The Old Library, Lloyd's
Thursday, 13 February 2020
1:10 pm – 1:55 pm (UK time)
    • Roger Adamson, CEO, Futurenautics Maritime
  • Marine & Energy

In this IIL marine & energy lecture Roger Adamson explained how global megatrends, exponentially moving technologies and new generational mindsets will combine to create the new seaconomics of the next 30-50 years. He also explored how maritime stakeholders have a unique opportunity to take advantage of the new digital (DX) economy.

Global megatrends, exponential technologies and the new generational mindsets are combining causing intense disruption that will change the world more in the next 30-50 years than in the centuries between the renaissance and the 20th century.

This e-naissance will affect every sector of the shipping industry from container to dry bulk fundamentally changing the type and volume of goods we transport by sea. It also provides shipping with a range of opportunities to be the intelligent, integrated, circular and decarbonised transport network of the future.

Using technology, it can delivery radical transparency to customers and maritime stakeholders underpinning the transition to hyper-rational decision making. At the heart of intelligent transport networks of the future will be autonomous and unmanned systems. These systems, in their infancy today, will change the world fleet and its operation as it too becomes digital, decarbonised and circular.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • The combinatorial effects of technology, megatrends and new mindsets on shipping and the maritime industry
  • The transformation shipping needs to undertake to become the digital, decarbonised and circular network of the future
