Redesigning our skies

The Old Library, Lloyd's
Thursday, 10 October 2019
1:10 pm – 1:55 pm (UK time)
    • Jane Johnston, Head of Corporate & Community Affairs, NATS
  • Aviation & Space

In this IIL aviation lecture Jane Johnston talked about the Government's policy to modernise UK airspace, why it's long overdue, how long it will take and the challenges it presents to the aviation industry.

The network of routes that make up our invisible infrastructure in the sky, was designed more than 50 years ago for aircraft which are now in museums. Today's modern aircraft are capable of much higher levels of performance than the airspace allows for.

Air traffic has more than doubled in the past 25 years and is forecast to continue rising, but our airspace will simply run out of space if we don't modernise it, making best use of the latest technologies to improve efficiency and, importantly, environmental performance which matters enormously to communities overflown on a regular basis.

With Brexit looming, the UK's global connectivity has never been more important. The aviation industry is vital to that. The UK sits at a strategic aviation crossroads that has put us firmly on the map and makes us a recognised leader in the industry. Modernising our airspace is vital to maintaining that position.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • How airspace in the UK works
  • Why the UK is embarking on a major programme to redesign air routes across the country
  • How the programme will be delivered

Zoë Layden, Managing Director, Claveaux Consulting.
