The changing nature of fire losses

The importance of effective fire management cannot be overplayed and of particular interest to the insurance industry is the apparently increasing problem of hot work fires.

In this IIL property investors lecture Deon Webber discussed IFIC Forensics' perspective on the topical subject of construction fires and specifically those involving Hot Work and how they manifest themselves in the current day claims environment. It discussed:

• What exactly is meant by the term 'Hot Works'?
• How does Hot Work lead to fires?
• What provisions are present to reduce the risk?
• What are the issues that lead to these provisions being ineffective?
• How do we deal with these issues?

Deon discussed how those dealing with claims involving Hot Work - particularly when involving high value properties - should be checking job quotations; method statements; risk assessments and asking questions like:

• Do they demonstrate a professional approach?
• Do they demonstrate that they are aware of their obligations under the policy and industry guidance?

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

• What constitutes Hot Work?
• What guidance is available for those carrying out Hot Work?
• What is the purpose of a Hot Work Permit?
• How can the insurance industry reduce claims involving Hot Work?
