Class Actions - developments in group litigation and class actions globally
In this IIL accident lecture James Cooper gave a snapshot of group litigation both in the UK and globally and how it has developed over the last decade, including the increasing influence of litigation funders, and how litigation landscape is changing both here and abroad as a result.
Class actions have long been prevalent in the US, but in recent times, such actions (or other forms of collective action) have spread throughout the globe, driven by a combination of a plethora of corporate scandals, the availability of third party litigation funding, legislative reform and a developing appetite for litigation outside of traditional markets like the US. In his lecture, James detailed the key mechanisms and trends in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:
- Group litigation mechanisms around the world
- Key trends in class actions generally and in relation to securities class actions
- Factors that have contributed to this changing litigation landscape
Chair:
Neville White, Senior Liability Underwriter, Tokio Marine Kiln.
