The role of the AAIB, accident scenarios and the potential implication for insurers
In this IIL aviation lecture John McMillan talked about how the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) investigates aircraft accidents and used case examples to show how the work of the AAIB may have implications for the insurance industry.
The UK AAIB has been investigating air accidents and serious incidents for over 100 years. These range from correspondence investigations for light aircraft or balloons, to large scale commercial air transport aircraft; typically they deploy a field team 30 to 40 times per year.
Over many years the AAIB has developed a healthy relationship with loss adjusters. This lecture will contain a short description of the AAIB and use a wide range of cases to highlight potential issues for the relationship between loss adjusters and the AAIB.
By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:
- The role of the AAIB in investigation and safety
- The variation of scale and nature in aircraft accident investigation
- Understanding the implications of the work of the AAIB for insurers
Chair:
John Bayley, Regional Director, McLarens Aviation.
