London's Air Ambulance - challenges of operations

The Old Library, Lloyd's
Thursday, 22 March 2018
1:15 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)
    • Charles Newitt, Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer, London's Air Ambulance
  • Aviation & Space

In this IIL aviation lecture Charles Newitt talked about the role and function of London's Air Ambulance (LAA) as one of the emergency services supporting London on a daily basis and during major incidents. He also talked about some of the challenges in managing risk and safety of operating a helicopter in central London and the training involved.

Charles noted that few understand the role of LAA or that it is a Charity and by explaining the role of their trauma teams, his intention was for the audience to obtain a better understanding not only what they do, but the challenges in getting to the side of a patient in the quickest possible time safely. As London develops, getting a helicopter to the scene is becoming increasingly difficult, what are the risks, how do they manage those risks and how do they train for it. Looking into the future, Charles concluded by questioning how one might deliver this through better medical technology or new transport developments.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • The role and function of LAA in supporting London
  • The risks and challenges of operating aviation in central London
  • A look to the future - what could it look like?
