A perspective from Europe on Brexit

The Old Library, Lloyd's
Wednesday, 19 April 2017
1:15 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)
    • Dr Michael Menhart, Chief Economist, Munich Re
  • Reinsurance

In this IIL reinsurance lecture Dr Michael Menhart talked about the Brexit process from a European perspective. In his presentation, Michael outlined the internal and external political challenges, economic impact, key issues, the potential outcomes and their implications for the UK and the EU.

Michael indicated that the long-term economic consequences of the Brexit decision is likely to depend on the future trade agreement between the UK and the EU. He forsaw a period of political uncertainty for both parties - and for the entire financial services industry as the EU enters Brexit negotiations in a time of increasing internal and external political pressure. Michael concluded that it would be beneficial for all sides to keep close ties, but feels that the economic rationale may not be the decisive element in the negotiations.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • Key challenges in the Brexit negotiation process and potential outcomes
  • Implications for the EU and UK economy
