Entrepreneurs Learn From Previous Successes

Dorset-based chartered accountants, tax, and business advisors Ward Goodman hosted an Entrepreneurs’ Lunch for more than 30 invited business owners, giving them an opportunity to connect with directors, staff and learn from inspirational guest speakers.

Held at Les Bouviers, Canford Magna, Wimborne, speakers comprised key decision makers and successful Dorset business owners who have ‘been there and done it’. They shared expertise covering a host of topics, from start-up to a more established stage.

Ian Rodd, managing director of Ward Goodman, said: “Owner managed businesses make a significant impact on the UK economy, which is why their health and growth are vital for long-term prosperity. As part of our focus on their priorities, understanding concerns and aspirations, we understand they need help during the different business growth stages.

“Entrepreneurs are often involved in everything – having started the business they are very much hands-on – however there comes a time when they need to bring in additional skills to build upon their ideas. Learning from peers, others who have moved on successfully and experienced that next stage is highly relevant, which is why we selected interesting speakers from varied sectors.”

Ward Goodman welcomed the following speakers:

1. Lyndon Stickley, Ringwood-based serial e-entrepreneur, executive mentor, non-exec director, investor, of Stratagem Management Services, who spoke about client negotiation. During the past 27 years, he has invested in, grown and sold six organisations, personally leading contractual negotiations and deal conclusion for three.

1. Rupert Holloway, of Dorset’s award-winning Conker Gin, who, having switched from working as a chartered surveyor to distilling gin, explained how, in 2013, he started a business in a crowded market place and on a shoestring.

1. Emma Honeybuns, Dorset baker, who, two decades ago, got on her bike to deliver cakes to cafes and delis in Oxford, now runs a 30-strong team at her trusted gluten free bakery. She spoke about how to deal with change, diversity, and connectivity.

1. Edwin Bessant, co-founder and CEO of Ceuta Healthcare, spoke about looking to the future, also future-proofing by buying and investing. With a blue chip background, his experience is vast, having spent time across all divisions of his industry.

1. Ross Thornley, co-founder and CEO of Leaps Innovation, spoke about new business and consultancy, especially how he works to develop teams with an innovative mindset.
